Research and Development Assistantships

Unlike an internship, an assistantship is a long term relationship between the student and the employer. Research and development graduate assistantships are for full-time students who are working part-time with a partner company on a research and development project as a part of their graduate degree or PhD program. An R&D assistantship is typically a one to three year agreement, lasting throughout the student’s entire course of study.

Because of the long term nature, the matching funds available through the Dakota Seeds program are increased to $8000 for master’s level and $10,000 for PhD level students annually. The assistantship must meet all of the requirements for Dakota Seeds funding. Students working as a research and development assistant must be enrolled full-time in good-standing at a South Dakota institution of higher learning.

You apply for assistantships using the Dakota Seeds application found on the funding page. Once your application has been approved, if you have not yet identified a student, Dakota Seeds will work to post the position on the Dakota Seeds website and will also forward it to the graduate schools with the required program. Once the student is identified, the educational institution will work with the student and the company to ensure that the work experience will complement the academic program.
